Natural Beauty

Feeling confident and happy within yourself can all start in the bathroom, with natural beauty products and rituals (see my post on the importance of rituals here) helping to look after your physical being, protecting the body, and creating a true connection between mind, body and soul. Read on for four of my favourite natural beauty products and rituals!

Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic technique involving swishing oil (I use coconut oil) in your mouth and ‘pulling’ the oil between the teeth, for twenty minutes every day. This practice cleanses the mouth of bacteria and toxins that can be detrimental to our dental health. Oil pulling has been linked to whiter teeth, an increase in overall wellbeing, clearer skin, fresher breath, increased energy and a clearer mind. Twenty minutes might seem like a long time the first few times you try oil pulling, but incorporating other elements of your morning or night-time routine into it will help you cross more things off your list! Read a book, pack your lunch, get your shopping list sorted, and then by the time you have finished these, twenty minutes is up, and you can spit out your coconut oil, brush your teeth and voila! You have successfully oil-pulled!

The power of lemons is undisputed. Lemons are anti-viral, antimicrobial, and pack an immune-boosting punch! Drinking warm water with the juice of a fresh lemon upon rising encourages proper digestion and kick starts the liver, encouraging detoxification and removal of unwanted toxins and wastes from the body. Lemons are rich in vitamin C, which is necessary for collagen production and skin healing. Vitamin C is vital for glowing skin, and the alkalising effect that lemons have in the body helps ward off unwanted bacterial reactions, such as acne. The antioxidant properties of lemons help to fight free-radical damage and as such, combat aging.

One of my favourite creations is my morning coffee scrub. I have percolated coffee most mornings, so once I’m done with the ground coffee, I grab it out of the percolator, mix it with coconut oil and some essential oils, and scrub it on my skin in the shower. The smell of the coffee really wakes me up, and the benefits of applying coffee topically are abundant! The slightly acidic nature of coffee tightens pores, gently exfoliates the skin, and in combination with the coconut oil, creates a protective layer, giving the skin moisture and skin-loving antioxidants. Coffee may also be effective in reducing the appearance cellulite, with caffeine working to reduce swelling and inflammation.

I have been using rosehip oil for many years now, and it will forever remain a staple in my bathroom. Rosehip oil is rich in essential fatty acids, which help to reduce existing sun damage, improve the appearance of scars, wrinkles, burns, stretch marks, and works to quench dry, thirsty skin. Rosehip oil also contains and abundance of antioxidants, which work to protect and repair skin, preventing aging and free-radical damage. The pro-vitamin A content of rosehip oil also helps to repair damage caused by sun exposure, making rosehip oil a must for any natural beauty regime.
